Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) Grow you own Yerba Mate and enjoy this popular South American tea as an alternative beverage to coffee. In Latin America, Yerba Mate is the beverage of choice and has a smoother taste than green tea, plus it’s loaded with antioxidants. The itself makes a wonderful potted for its graceful full-leafed branches. Under warm temperatures, it grows throughout the year, even in the north as a potted with flowers arriving during the winter/spring months. The leaves can be harvested once the is established. Grow in full sun with temperature above 65° for fastest growth. Hardiness Zone 10 Bloom Season Spring, Winter Sun Requirement Full Sun, Partial Sun Grows to 2-4' Minimum Temperature Indoors 50 Light: Full or partial sun; a southern, eastern, or western exposure. Temperature: Maintain indoor temperatures above 60?. for maximum growth. However, they will tolerate lower temperatures down to the 30’s without harm as long as it is not sustained. Humidity: Preferably above 50%; however, they can tolerate lower levels without any difficulty. Watering: Bring the soil to visual dryness between waterings and then thoroughly saturate. Fertilizer: Moderate feeders. Apply a balanced fertilizer like a 15-15-15 or a 7-9-5 weekly or biweekly from spring to fall. Pruning: When s are young, pinching the tips of the expanding growth will help create a dense specimen and increase leaf volume.
