Will these retaining snap rings work for SAE applications as well?

Kent, not sure if you refer to SAE for standard inch sizes or for automotive use? Regardless these are metric and suit my needs in the motorbike world. Are they the best spring steel etc? Don't think so but again, this kit works perfectly for my needs and based on that, I'd buy again.

what is the thickness of the clips?

approximate thickness is about 1/16" for the larger clips and about 1/32" for the smaller clips. if not efficient answer you could probably get the exact specs from the manufacturer.
